Joe Philbin named Dolphins Head Coach

Irsay and the Colts front office put an end to the Miami Dolphin’s strategy to hire Mike McCoy and then trade a first round pick for Tim Tebow.  When Bob Irsay cleaned house this week and made his intentions clear that he was going to use the 1st pick in the draft to draft Stanford’s Andrew Luck , the Broncos opportunity to trade three 1st round picks to the Colts for the rights to Luck went away.  Miami has planned all along to bring in the offensive coordinator of the quarterback they would acquire this offseason.  Tebow was their first choice and up until the last few days they planned on bringing in both McCoy and Tebow.  Their second choice was the Packer’s Philbin and back-up quarterback Matt Flynn.

Once Denver learned that Andrew Luck would not be available, Tebow became the Broncos best, and only, option for the 2012 season.  Although Tebow is not the type of  quarterback Elway envisions leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl, he will have to give him a real shot at the job now that Luck is no longer available.

It was not Tebow who was responsible for the fans in the stands. The Dolphins sales team, in an attempt to increase attendance designated the Denver game as a tribute to the Florida Gator’s National Championship team.

I was at the game, and I can assure you that there were thousands of fans disguised as empty seats. I also spoke to several fans who had driven to the game from around the state because of the tribute to the Gators. I never got any sense that these fans would be willing to purchase season tickets if Tebow was traded to the Dolphins. For most of them it was a one time trip to Miami for a special tribute to their National Champion Gators.

I have lived in South Florida for most of my life and I can assure you that one player, not even Tebow, is not going to increase season ticket sales substantially. The vast majority of fans of South Florida go to sporting events for one reason and one reason only, to see a winning team.

If Tebow were to come to Miami, he might draw a few thousand more fans to the stadium initially because of his status at the University of Florida. This interest in Tebow though would only last as long as he provided the team with wins. Once these fans realize that he is not the next Dan Marino and the Dolphins aren’t going anywhere with him at the QB position, they would boo him constantly and his time in Miami would prove to be very short indeed.

With the signing of Philbin as the Dolphins HC, Tebow has absolutely no chance of being traded to Miami. I know that there are thousnads of fans in Denver who love Tebow and want him to remain as the teams starting QB. I certainly am happy that with the signing of Philbin, the rumors of Tebow coming to Miami can finally be put to bed permanently and he will remain in Denver where he is loved.

Good luck to Tebow in Denver and all those fans should go right out and purchase those Tebow Broncos jerseys before they sell out.

Great post. I agree that you you can put the Tebow to Miami rumors to bed and that Miami fans will only support a winner. I also agree that the Dolphins would get an initial bump in ticket sales from having Tebow on the team. I believe that Tebow and McCoy would have won games, division titles, and possibly make the Super Bowl.

As far as Philbin and Flynn go, I believe that they will also win games, win division titles, and possibly make a Super Bowl….once Brady retires. It was a great move to hire a coach that will implement the same system that their incoming quarterback ran. We all saw how Kevin Kolb struggled in Arizona this year in a new offensive system. I wish the best for Coach Philbin and believe that after his family tragedy this will be a good move for him and his family. He must be on an emotional rollercoaster and I hope he is very successful.

I don’t think time ran out on the Dolphins. I don’t think the Dolphins front office ever wanted Tebow and by hiring Philbin, instead of McCoy, they went with the coach they felt was the better head coaching prospect.

While you obviously get joy in reporting that the Dolphins had an interest in trading for Tebow. I don’t believe this for one moment. When Tebow played in Miami this past season, there were thousands of empty seats in the stadium. Trading for Tebow would not increase attendance at the stadium one bit.

The only thing that will fill up the stadium is a winning football team and with Tebow as the starting QB for the Dolphins, winning football games is not something Dolphin fans would see much of.

Obviously you make some good points. I think your data is a little bit off however.

New England Game attendance: 66,860 Record 0-0
Houston: Game attendance: 51,032 Record 0-1
Denver: Game attendance: 63,800 Record 0-5
Washington: Game attendance: 57,007 Record 0-0
Buffalo: Game attendance: 57,531 Record 1-7
Oakland: Game attendance: 57,225 Record 2-7
Philadelphia: Game attendance: 67,823 Record 4-8
New York Jets: Game attendance: 65,811 Record 5-10

Tebow brought in fans that would not been there for the Dolphins game. The team was 0-5 and without Tebow attendence would have been in the high 40,000′s – low 50,000′s.

Tebow would bring in an extra 15,000-20,000 extra season ticket holders a year.

I do believe that Joe Philbin will be a great coach and that Matt Flynn has a chance to be good if you can get receivers that are as good as the Packer’s receivers.

      Thank you for your post!
